The Henryton Center Site

Carroll County, Maryland

The architectural historians of The Louis Berger Group, Inc., conducted an intensive-level historic and architectural resources survey of the Henryton Center, a former tuberculosis hospital complex located in Carroll County, Maryland, first established in the 1920s for the treatment of Maryland's African-American residents.

Henryton Sanatorium in 1926.

Undertaken for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the intensive survey included historical research, historic context preparation, field survey and the preparation of Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties survey forms for 23 individual buildings and structures and one potential historic district.

The historic context described the evolution of public tuberculosis facilities in Maryland during the 20th century and provided a framework for the evaluation of the historic district's and the individual buildings' eligibility for listing in the Maryland Register of Historic Properties.

The district's buildings, erected between 1923 and 1955, provide a unique glimpse at public health care facilities in the state during much of the 20th century.
