The Secaucus Potter's Field Cemetery

The Cemetery Before the Excavation: A Question of Respect

Before excavation, the potter's field cemetery lay hidden under a thick growth of underbrush and modern landfill right next to and under the New Jersey Turnpike.

In the 1980s, Hudson County built a temporary correctional/detention center in the area of the Secaucus Potter's Field.

Using historic maps and heavy machinery, Berger's archaeologists were able to discover many graves buried beneath the detention center road.

Bulldozing the top layer off the frozen ground in the potter's field vicinity found up to six feet of landfill masking the grave locations.
